Getting to Success
There are many trails that lead to success. To reach success, there are fundamentals that provide a smooth and effective journey. The following statements are from a variety of sources including Beyond the Tour. The items below are not in any particular order.
Success starts by knowing our strengths, passions, and purpose.
| The Individual |
A team is all about the individual. How does the individual create harmony, cooperate, and share responsibility? Once you understand your own needs, agenda, and values, then you will be ready to work with others to achieve success. You are in control. |
| Connection |
Take time to authentically connect with each individual on your team. Understand the value they bring, the power they hold, the objectives they have, and the agenda they choose. Once that is understood among all team members, then you can develop goals and objectives that will satisfy the collective team. |
| Trust |
Trust is the most fundamental part of a winning team. To gain trust, share your feelings, personal stories, and your vulnerabilities. Sharing your story is not easy but will invite others to share theirs. This will instill trust and confidence of those you work with. Take your time on this one. |
| Ego |
We all have it but is something that needs to be managed. The best thing is try to put your ego aside. If there is any tension, resentment, or any other issue, expose it to the leader in your team. It is better to discuss issues than to let them impact your work life. Also, do not let your ego get in the way of team success. If there is someone in the team who has a greater aptitude for something, let them do it. This will lead to greater respect and team success. |
| Judgment |
We all have bad mouthed people and pointed fingers at others for lack of success. Point the finger at yourself once in a while and be accountable for your own actions. We all have judgments but those who keep it to themselves and focus on their own issues and opportunities, will have a greater impact on team success. |
| Take Time |
Hike, read, work-out, meditate, whatever. Take time to be with yourself and your thoughts. Of course, hiking is recommended as the fresh air, physical activity, and chance for your mind to be free, all improves your creativity, health and wellness. You would be surprised at the results. |
| Confidence |
This is a big one for many including myself. If you don't confide in yourself, how can you be proud and have confidence in others? There are many organizations that help uncover what is holding you back. It is up to you to move forward. |
| Integrity |
Be accountable for your own actions. If you say something, do it. Keep yourself in integrity with others and yourself. Don't be afraid to say no. We all love to say "yes" far too often. The only one who suffers is you. Think about whether you really can and want to deliver on specific requests or promises you make to yourself. Be realistic. Be accountable. |
| Meet |
We all meet but the challenge is where, what, how, when, and why. Find the right answer to all the questions before hand. Also, state the objective and make sure all attendees buy in prior to assigning action items. Make each person is held accountable for action items they agreed to. Too many meetings are just meetings. It is important to really make sure all those with a vested interest meet regularly to freely discuss ideas, feeling, challenges, and connection with assigned objectives. |
| Health |
Stress, resiliency, anxiety, anger, confidence, self-image, esteem are all impacted by physical and mental wellness. If you don't make the time to stay healthy, you will suffer and so will the team. |
